It is fitting that the performer at our final Friday Night Live celebration is none other than the phenomenal Elizabeth Busch.

After receiving her MA from University of Southern California, Elizabeth embarked upon a successful career playing and teaching classical guitar, performing at various venues throughout Los Angeles and northern California. She also began exploring songwriting as a means of combining her passions of creative writing and music. Her songs express truth and beauty with the earthy simplicity of acoustic, folk-inspired music.

Since we started live music at the winery back in 2009, Elizabeth has been one of our more frequent, and certainly beloved, performers. Anyone who has heard her performances will understand why.

There was an attempt to keep the identity of our final scheduled Happy Thursday performers a secret, at least form the ‘Old Guy’ but there were too many helpful friends who unwittingly ‘spilled the beans’ (the secret lasted all of 24 hours). In truth though, there really was only one choice; the band that has performed at more Happy Thursdays than any other, and in the process whose members have all become a part of our family. This week we welcome, perhaps for the final time, the incomparable Mike Justis Band to the tasting room for a final rousing performance. Don’t miss out on the fun.

Stone Soup Catering will be joining us, serving some of their specialty soups and sandwiches for your enjoyment (The Old Guy highly recommends the Mac & Cheese)

Nano Whitman, Folk Rock, Friday, April 20th, 7:00-9:00pm

Our headliner for Friday Night Live is Austin, TX, based singer/songwriter Nano Whitman. This Philadelphia native graduated from Harvard with a degree in music composition then relocated in 2004 to immersed himself in the heart of Austin’s thriving music scene. His song, “28,” won first prize in the 2010 Billboard World Song Contest for Americana/Folk and was awarded second place in the Singer/Songwriter category of the 2010 International Songwriting Competition, largely thought of as the premier songwriting competition in the world with over 15,000 entries.

Trained in the classics but schooled on classic rock, Nano’s songs are constructed with honesty; including heartfelt stories of family ties and tensions, as well as loves found and lost. Nano is a piano-playing story teller and often migrates to the guitar when the song calls for it, but it is his vocals – sometimes soaring, sometimes intimate, always inviting and warm – that truly drive the music he loves to make.

GuitarBari is a local jazz duo featuring Ken True on guitar and Stephen Giannetti on baritone sax. They first performed in the tasting room at a private party and made such an impression that we decided to bring them back for you to enjoy. They bring a mellow and soulful approach to jazz standards, and unique takes on popular songs. They are the perfect start to a fun evening of music.

Greg Willett has more than 25 years of diverse professional experience–from playing with jazz legend Ritchie Cole to touring with rock-and-roll bands—and he brings his wonderful jazz trio to this week’s Happy Thursday celebration. Greg’s piano playing offers the listener comfortable lyricism with a nod toward the jazz and pop traditions, so stop by to lend an ear!

Our featured performers for this week’s Wine-In Wednesday, are the four piece ensemble The Souterrain, an award-winning folk and jazz outfit from Davis. “We make some strange music, but we do our best to make it pretty. Folk cures, lullabies, and revenge fantasies all have their home in our soundscape.”

The group features Lauren Norton, Sam Shirley, David Sachs, and Kelsey Brewer described as a “no frills all-acoustic style features dexterous standup bass and agile acoustic guitar accompanying singer Lauren Norton, whose rich voice is, by turns, sincere and flirtatious.” -Music Connection
